News: Security Advisory: High Severity Vulnerability in Linux Kernel - Copy Fail

This advisory is provided as a courtesy.


We want to bring to your attention a newly discovered vulnerability affecting major Linux OS distributions. The vulnerability, known as "Copy Fail", has been assigned CVE number: CVE-2026-31431 with CVSS score of 7.8 out of 10. It affects all major Linux distributions running kernel versions released since 2017.

Affected Software


Most major Linux distributions such as Ubuntu (certain releases) and AlmaLinux are affected.


How to Fix the Problem


Update to the latest kernel version depending on the Linux OS.


On Ubuntu systems:


apt update
apt upgrade
apt dist-upgrade (to install all patches)


On AlmaLinux systems:


dnf clean all
dnf update kernel -y


Note: The patches might not be available for older distributions and operating systems that are already EOL (end-of-life) and no longer supported, such as CentOS systems. For this one, you need to upgrade to supported operating systems.
